OPEN MIC NIGHT
March 12, 2019 / 8p
Wexner 434

Walls can protect, divide or imprison. They can keep people out, or hold people in. They can be torn down, blown up, erected, summited, or left to crumble with time. The Arts and Culture Caucus, a student organization at HKS, exists to tear down the walls we put up around our creative selves. Join us, Tuesday, March 12th at 8pm in Wexner 434, for an Open Mic Night emceed by Prof. Tim McCarthy, to explore the theme of Walls and share your creative self. Poets, speechmakers, musicians, songwriters, actors, comedians, storytellers, spectators and all are welcome! A great way to test out your talent show material on a warm and welcoming audience. Food will be provided.
CREATING SPACE FOR EQUITY

Creative placemaking – the process of shaping the physical and social character of a neighborhood, town, or city, around arts and cultural activities – often rest within the policy frame of urban planning and economic development. Courtney D. Sharpe, Boston’s Director of Cultural Planning, and Boston Poet Laureate Porsha Olayiwola will explore who benefits from this kind of growth, who is displaced by it, and how artists can animate public spaces to help diverse communities develop a deeper sense of cultural and civic belonging. Co-sponsored with the HKS Black Student Union.
THE CREATIVE ECONOMY AND FUTURE OF WORK
April 17, 2019 / 6:30p

Artists don’t often enter the conversation about the future of work and the impact automation will have on the labor market. Yet, human creativity is one of our primary competitive advantages over machines. Saba Ghole, co-founder of NuVu Studios, and Olivia D’Ambrosio, Founder and Producing Artistic Director for Bridge Repertory Theater, will explore how we should think about the role of artists and creative careers as we prepare for the jobs of tomorrow.
HKS ARTS TOWN HALL
April 25, 2019 / 5p
Wexner 436, HKS

At the end of this series, we will consider: what’s next? What type of artistic training do policy makers and future leaders need to do their best work? How can we make policy change that will support thriving, arts, cultural and creative ecosystems? HKS Dean Doug Elmendorf and Adele Fleet Bacow, President of Community Partners Consultants, will kick off the town hall with a wide-ranging conversation about the role of the arts in public policy development and training, followed by a design exercise to imagine new creative possibilities for HKS.
